The Vienum Librarian - Uni Concept Work

At university we've been working on a big world-building project, creating a shop and a shop-keeper over the last few months. It was going fine for me until I decided to scrap all my work halfway through and restart from the beginning, as I felt my previous concept felt uninspiring. I'm happy to say I've finished the character concept art, with my shopkeeper 'The Vienum'.

- The Vienum -
A small collection of men and women chosen by a committee within a brutalist Vatican to preserve old testaments, original books detailing scientific concepts hidden from the public and scrolls of forbidden magic.
The selection process has divided opinions between the people closely affected by the Vienum. Children from vulnerable families are given by their parents at a young age in promise of good education. They are effectively brainwashed and heavily monitored in a secure environment. Though they’re given the most thorough education in the country and trained to be human calculators and computers, they’re embedded with magic that allows them to survive a brutal surgery that removes their innards to make space for a golden display case. The victims are dressed head to toe in velvet, gold and satin, and once they’re fit to be in the public eye, they’re placed in the higher tiers of their Library to look down upon visitors. The Vienum protect the Archolitic Libraries and are the only individuals with the ability to attain information inside of the testaments.
They are often heard humming through the halls; some thinks it’s a self-soothing technique, but some who are superstitious believe if you hear her singing, it is her call to you that death is to come soon. Some, rather, believe that her humming has natural healing/soothing abilities. They’re all false - so what does it mean?
